DDR SDRAM typer:
Der findes tre DDR SDRAM typer, DDR, DDR2 og DDR3. Herunder ser du, hvordan du kan identificere hvilken type RAM modul der sidder i din PC:


Når du skal købe nye eller extra RAM moduler er det vigtigt at du vælger den type som er understøttet af dit PC motherboard. Herunder finder du en detaljeret beskrivelse af de tre DDR SDRAM typer:

DDR SDRAM Står for double data rate synchronous dynamic random access memory. DDR RAM overfører data to gange pr. clock cycle. DDR clock speed er 200 MHz (DDR-200) eller 400 MHz (DDR-400). DDR-200 moduler er efterhånden udgået og vanskelig at skaffe. DDR-400 moduler fås fortsat og kan overføre op til 3200 MB/s.

DDR2 SDRAM står for double data rate 2 synchronous dynamic random access memory.DDR2 er dobbelt så hurtig som DDR og er i øvrigt mindre strømforbrugende. DDR2 clock speed kan være 667 MHz (DDR2-667) eller 800 MHz (DDR2-800). DDR2-800 overfører op til 6400 MB/s.

DDR3 SDRAM Står for double data rate 3 synchronous dynamic random access memory. In teorien er DDR3 dobbelt så hurtig som DDR2 hukommelse. DDR3 clock speed kan være 1333 MHz (DDR3-1333), 1600 MHz (DDR3-1600), 1866 MHz (DDR3-1833) og 2100 MHz (DDR3-2100). DDR3-1600 overfører op til 12800 MB/s.

ECC kontra non-ECC hukommelse
When adding new memory, you should match what is already in your system. Adding non-ECC memory to an ECC system will disable the error-checking and correcting ability of your memory modules. While your system may still operate, the enhanced features of the ECC modules will no longer be active in your computer.
You can determine if your system has ECC by simply counting the number of black memory chips on each module. ECC (and parity) memory modules have a chip count divisible by three or five. This extra chip detects if the data was correctly read or written by the memory module. If the data wasn't properly written, the extra chip will correct it in many cases (depending on the type of error). Non-ECC (also called non-parity) modules do not have this error-detecting feature. Any chip count not divisible by three or five indicates a non-parity memory module.
Using ECC decreases your computer's performance by about 2 percent. Current technology DRAM is very stable, and memory errors are rare, so unless you have a need for ECC, you are better served with non-parity (non-ECC) memory.

Notebook RAM kontra PC/server RAM Bemærk i øvrigt at Notebook ram moduler adskiller sig fra PC/server RAM-moduler mht. formfaktor. Notebook RAM er kendetegnet ved at have 204-pin SO-DIMM form. De er desuden højere end de traditionelle 240-pin DIMM RAM moduler.
